The Duchess of Windsor was born Bessie Wallis Warfield on 19th June 1895 and was later to nearly destroy the British monarchy, when, as a divorcee, she planned to marry the uncrowned King Edward.

It was this constitutional crisis that led to the King's abdication in December 1936. Together they lived in exile in France.

Following the Duke of Windsor's death in 1972, she lived as a recluse until her own death on 24th April 1986.

When asked the secret of a happy life, the Duchess replied "Fill what's empty, empty what's full, and scratch where it itches."
