Simpson creator Matt Groenig decided to launch a new animated series following the success of the Simpsons and plumped for Futurama, a cartoon series following the exploits of pizza delivery boy Philip Fry and his colleagues at Planet Express, a 31st Century interplanetary deliver service.

Bender's catchphrase is the insult "Bite my shiny metal ass" while his most terrifying nightmare is a vision of the number 2, a joke referencing the binary numeral system. (Fry assures him, "there's no such thing as two.")
