Unlike Will Young, who quickly took control of his own career, the young Gareth Gates was merely a money making machine for the pop industry and as such within a couple of years, without any meaningful musical direction, his popularity waned and he was dropped by his record label.

Rumours that the result of Pop Idol was fixed to ensure he did not win in case he insisted on making an acceptance speech which would have meant News at Ten being considerably delayed have always been denied.
