John Major Autograph
John Major was born on 29th March 1943 and became Prime Minister of the UK in 1990 after the fall of Margaret Thatcher. In 1992 he won the general election with the most votes ever cast, but lost again spectacularly in 1997 with one of the worst electoral defeats in British politics since the Great Reform Act of 1832.
Following that defeat, John Major reminisced "I inherited a sick economy and passed on a sound one. But one abiding regret for me is that, in between, I did not have the resources to put in place the educational and social changes about which I cared to much; I made only a beginning, and it was not enough."
