JWendy Richard was born Wendy Emerton on 20th July 1943 and although having already had a long acting career went on to become the nation's favourite both for her role as Miss Brahmns in Are You Being Served and then as the matriarchal figure Pauline Fowler in EastEnders, a role she played for 22 years until the character was killed off in December 2006 after Wendy decided to leave the show, although she kept in touch with her on screen family until her death on 26th February 2009 from cancer.

Perhaps the most fitting and apt tribute to her was made by Todd Carty, her screen son Mark Fowler who said: “Wendy was a fantastic lady and a real friend. She had a heart of gold and was without doubt a British institution. She will always be remembered by millions of fans she entertained throughout her career.”
